What is a power surge

In the most basic terms of power surge is a spike in your homes electrical current,  usually these last less than 1000th of a second.

Power surges can happen during lightning strikes record by your utility company or even if a large appliance turns off and on.

Are power surges dangerous?

Power surges can be dangerous as they can damage or destroy any electrical device that is plugged in.  when electricity flows through an appliance from a surge the appliance can overheat break or in the worst case catch fire.

Protecting your home

The good news is that you can protect your home and appliances from damage by following a few simple steps.

Use Surge protectors, these can be expensive but should be used on all your most important electronics such as the television. computers, phones, devices should be plugged into the surge protector bar or outlet. This means that they will be protected from any sudden voltage rise.

Unplug your electronics during a storm –  this should be a fairly straightforward idea but many people do not think to unplug there devices during a storm.

Have your wiring checked –  if your home’s wiring is faulty or substandard this can make such issues worse,  make sure you have a qualified electrician check your wiring especially in an older home.  you should have your wiring checked at least every 10 years
